Author's Autograph Edition; 39 volumes (of 40, lacks the third volume of the Life of Columbus); 'autograph' is used in the sense of being hand written, no signature is present nor should it be, the first volume of the set does properly contain a leaf of manuscript in Irving's hand, in this set, one page, beginning with ?The fame of the Portuguese discoveries, drew the attention of the world, and the learned, the curious and the adventurous resorted to Lisbon to engage in the enterprises continually fitting out. Among the rest Columbus arrived there about the year 1470. ...?; later three quarter blue cloth with gray paper covered board sides; bindings and paper spine labels lightened at spines, light age staining throughout but not fragile and entirely readable, the manuscript leaf age toned with short tear separating tip where attached to blank but with no text touched. VI, Part I. with plates 1 through 12, a folding table, and a folding map of Tunis; VI, Parts II/III/IV with plates, part two 1 through 4, part three 1 through 9, part four 1; now in seven matching later cloth bindings, all the plates are folding and include some maps, two of them and the folding table have been sewn shut by the binder and cannot be opened without producing slight roughness at one margin, some show offset but usually at least near very good and many clean and crisp, the text has light age toning but sound and not fragile, some volumes have pen note on blank "Presented to the Taunton Museum by Alfred Maynard, Nov. 8th 1877", otherwise clean and very good.
