- Description: Part 1 only, first separate edition from The American Joural of Science and Arts; physician and chemist Franklin Bache's copy with two written and signed letters to him from Carey tipped in at front, the first dated January 23, 1860, one small octavo page, "My father [naturalist Isaac Lea] tells me that you have remarked several typographical errors in my paper on numerical relations ..." and asks what they are; the second dated January 25, 1860, three smaller pages, Bache has sent Carey a marked copy of the article (this one, with marginalia throughout, the pencil notes by Bache, the ink ones apparently by Carey), Carey passes on cases were Bache's objections are "justly taken", as in the first letter he blames his eyesight for some of them, but goes into detail defending a few points on which they simply disagree; 16 pp.; the unprinted paper wrappers chipped with loss of part of the inscription on front cover “Dr. Bache with respects [of] The Auth[or]”; vertical fold mark and a few corners bent but a sound interior; "Like many others, he indulged in speculations on chemical theory, especially upon the connection between the properties of the atoms and their numerical relations. In the first part of his paper On Numerical Relations existing between the Equivalent Numbers of Elementary Bodies, he undertook to show 'that the number 44.45 plays an important part in the science of stoichiometry, and that the relations which depend upon it are supported, in some cases at least, in a remarkable manner, by analogies of atomic volume.'" – Mathew Lea Carey, 1823-1897 by George F.
